Plaza de mulas

So we are now in base camp! A real little village, with internet connection, satellite phones, showers, and everything! For a price, of course... the internet here costs 10 US $ for 15 minutes, so as you can guess, I will not be making huge entries.

Puente del Inca, a natural formation that we briefly visited right before arriving at the entrance to the park.

The 3 days it took us to walk here were absolutely magnificient! We had bad weather on the first day, but gorgeous, sunny weather yesterday and today, and I went crazy looking and taking pictures. Some people do just this part, a 5 day trek, and then go home. And it is very much worth it, I did not have enough eyes to see everything, we were constantly surrounded by mountains, and they were created by such an array of geological happenings that the variety of colours, shapes and altitude is mind boggling. I am ecstatic!

Lunch on the first day.

The first day, we walked to Confluencia, a campground at about 3300m, where Claudia left us with our guide Lito.

Jackman, me, Claudia, Lito, Shum.

High-tec showers at the campground.

Our sleeping accommodation at Confluencia campground, 28 bunk beds.(and a perhaps not so funny story- the water at this camp, while safe to drink, causes gas, and this dome tent has to be shut at night because of the cold. imagine our relief to get out of it in the morning when it was full!

We had an amazing sunset that evening!

My hat caused general hilarity, as it lit up when a flash was used, ruining all pictures.

The next day, we did a return trip to Plaza Francia, from where we got to admire the south face of Aconcagua, the hardest way to climb it.

The south face

With Jackman in front of the south wall.

And on the last day, we walked the many hours (8.5) it takes to get to base camp.

With Lito, admiring the view.

Before I forget, there is a camera here too, that portrays live images from here 24 hours a day. Tomorrow, we have a rest day. I will make it a point to come wave in front of it a few times, in case some of you can log on! I will do so at 8h local Montreal time (14h local Berlin time), and will try for every two hours after that if I can, until 8pm, local Montreal time, which is . Lots of things planned otherwise, first and foremost, shower and a bit of laundry.

I have a tent to myself, since I am the only girl, they felt sorry about putting me in the common, dome tent full of (snoring!) guys, so this is luxury!

Oh, and the address! www.aconcaguanow.com Just log on, and I will be waving on the other side!

Big hug to everyone, I promise I will make longer entries when we are back in civilization.

Schedule for now; rest day tomorrow, load carrying to a higher camp the next day, then another rest day, then... the hard stuff starts.
